AC Not Cooling, Electricity Bill Rising? Check the Star Rating on Your AC’s Energy Saving Label!

Who isn’t frustrated when the AC feels like it’s not cooling enough, but surprisingly, the electricity bill shoots up? This is a classic problem that often gives many people a headache. We want comfort, a cool room, but we also don’t want our wallets to be drained by electricity bills. As a company expert in HVAC solutions, Satake Fimar deeply understands the importance of balancing maximum comfort with operational cost efficiency, especially for business, industrial, or large-scale company needs.

One key to avoiding this energy-wasting situation is to understand the ‘secret code’ on your AC: the Energy Saving Label. This label isn’t just an ordinary sticker; it’s an important guide showing how energy-efficient an AC operates. The government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), has a program called the Minimum Energy Performance Standard (SKEM). Simply put, this is the minimum standard of how efficiently an electronic appliance, including ACs, must operate to be allowed for sale. The goal is clear: so the appliances we use don’t waste energy, and we as consumers also benefit. Every AC sold in Indonesia that meets this standard will have a special label showing its energy-saving level. At Satake Fimar, we always ensure that the AC products we offer meet and even exceed these SKEM standards.

Take a close look at the label like the picture above on your AC unit (it’s usually attached to the indoor unit or the box). There’s some important information there that, according to us at Satake Fimar, is very important for you to understand:

Yesterday EER, Today CSPF: What’s the Difference?

Maybe you’ve heard the term EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) which indicates AC efficiency. That was indeed the standard used before. However, to get a more accurate picture of AC efficiency throughout the cooling season (not just at one test point), the standard used has now been updated from EER to CSPF or Cooling Seasonal Performance Factor.

What is CSPF? CSPF measures the total cooling capacity produced by the AC during one cooling season, divided by the total electrical energy consumed during the same period. This figure takes into account various temperature and load conditions that can occur throughout the AC’s usage.

So, just like EER, the HIGHER the CSPF figure, the more EFFICIENT the AC is in its seasonal electricity consumption. An AC with a high CSPF value provides good and consistent cooling performance with lower electricity consumption over the usage period. This is currently the best indicator to know how much electricity an AC saves in daily use under various conditions.

The Stars That Determine Savings (Now Based on CSPF!)

Besides the CSPF figure, the star symbols are still the easiest visual indicator to see the energy-saving level. This Energy Saving Label uses a star rating system, where the MORE stars (maximum 5), the more ENERGY EFFICIENT the AC is.

Currently, the number of stars is determined based on the range of its CSPF value, according to the latest SKEM criteria shown in the table:

  • 1 Star: For ACs with a CSPF value between 3.10 and less than 3.40 (3.10 ≤ CSPF < 3.40 W/W).
  • ⭐⭐ 2 Stars: For ACs with a CSPF value between 3.40 and less than 3.80 (3.40 ≤ CSPF < 3.80 W/W).
  • ⭐⭐⭐ 3 Stars: For ACs with a CSPF value between 3.80 and less than 4.20 (3.80 ≤ CSPF < 4.20 W/W).
  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 Stars: For ACs with a CSPF value between 4.20 and less than 5.00 (4.20 ≤ CSPF < 5.00 W/W).
  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 Stars: For ACs with a CSPF value of 5.00 or higher (CSPF ≥ 5.00 W/W). This represents the highest level of energy efficiency!

So, when you’re considering buying a new AC, besides the cooling capacity (BTU/h) which must match the room size for optimal cooling, it’s also very important to look at the number of stars (and the corresponding CSPF). An AC with 3, 4, or even 5 stars, if the capacity is right and installed correctly, will provide optimal cooling performance while significantly reducing electricity costs.

Choosing and installing the right AC, one that has a high CSPF rating and many stars, is indeed crucial for achieving maximum efficiency and AC longevity. However, determining the right capacity and correct installation is just as important. This is where the role of experts like us at Satake Fimar becomes vital.Satake Fimar is ready to help you understand your AC needs in more detail, choose the most energy-efficient unit (with the highest CSPF and most stars that fit), and ensure installation is done with the highest quality standards whether for industrial, office, or residential needs. That way, you won’t just get a cool and comfortable room, but also enjoy real savings on your electricity bill.
